5. Basilica della Madonna della Misericordia (Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy)
Just outside the ancient walls of Macerata stands the Basilica della Madonna della Misericordia, a place of worship that dates back to 1447, when the local community, to invoke the end of a devastating plague epidemic, built a small votive temple dedicated to the Virgin in a single day.
Between 1736 and 1741, the building underwent a significant transformation that gave the basilica its current Baroque appearance. The interior is enriched with frescoes by Francesco Mancini, including the Assumption of Mary on the ceiling, and works by Sebastiano Conca, such as the Immaculate Conception and the Nativity of Mary.
Subsequent interventions between 1860 and 1893 added an ambulatory and an external portico, further enriching the structure. In 1921, the church was elevated to the rank of minor basilica.
